The USS Columbia was commissioned on Star date 54679.4 from the
Xavier Fleet Yards orbiting Titan II. She was built
as a
state-of-the-art Exploration/Warship
and is more than capable of fulfilling both roles. Captain Dereck
Walker is currently in command of the Columbia and she is crewed by some of the
best personnel in Star Fleet. The USS Columbia is a newly commissioned starship,
her construction ending barely two month ago, and is already on her third
mission.
The USS Columbia is built more toward a warship variant then a
science vessel and is therefore better equipped to handle the every day dangers of operating in
the Delta Quadrant. These modifications include increased structural stability, more powerful shield's as well as two forward firing Torpedo Launchers and
engine nacelle phaser strips.
The Columbia has been assigned by Task force 38
to the Evelon Sector of space, located on the Northeastern border of
Federation Space in the Delta Quadrant. Attached to the Alpha Tactical Group,
the Columbia has been chosen to protect this area of
space from Borg incursion and to provide an exploration platform for the surrounding Solar systems. In light of the recent activities of the Romulan Empire
to try and thwart Federation expansion, the tactical wings of
Defense Force delta have been put on cautionary stand-by
to deal with any up-risings. In recent months a new Terrorist organization
has made itself known by attacking the Titan II Fleet Yards and threatening
Sabotage to stop Federation progress. Calling on the crew of the Columbia
and
USS Sheridan to act on behalf of Federation interests, Star
Fleet has officially
routed and disbanded this small group of renegades and the Romulan Empire has
denied any involvement in the affair.
However, this is only one of the a many dangers that the Columbia has faced in recent months. The Kazon, too, have been a problem, seeking to be a "Thorn in the side" for the Task Force at every possible opportunity. The way things stand the Delta Quadrant may prove to be an unwelcoming place for outsiders. The alternative is not an option in this case. With this new assignment the Columbia will be operating in entirely new areas of space and coming incontact with who-knows-what. Not only that but it is already proving hard to live in these hostile parts of space, such as the Delta Quadrant.
Star Fleet decided quite a few years ago to make it's step into the Delta Quadrent a permanent one. At the forefront of this movement was the Galaxy and Sovereign class reassignments in this area. Though Star Fleet uses many different ships in its armada, the projected power of the fleet is invested in the capital ships mentioned above. These ships have been given the task of establishing and protecting the new federation boarders in unclaimed territory. The USS Columbia is one of these ships given the task of carrying out exploration, diplomacy, science and colonization.
Those
aboard the Columbia has gladly accepted this mission and set course for
adventure and the unknown. Some one has once said ," all I ask is for a tall
ship and a star to guide her by." The USS Columbia is a tall and powerful ship.
Well built and Fresh out of space dock and ready to prove herself. Space
has many stars that we will chart our course by. No matter what the odds or the
danger, that is the price you pay for wearing a Star Fleet
uniform: of proudly standing and bearing its insignia on your chest. The ability
to go into the far reaches of space and claim it is not a responsibility to be
taken taken lightly. This is the brave and the gallant and the adventurous will
go. The struggle for survival is ongoing. The crew of the Columbia have
the will to go into new and strange worlds to seek out new civilizations to
boldly go where no man has gone before.
